Mr.cta85
Spotted #5050 (head car) as I was riding the Green Line traing towards downtown. That's pretty cool that 5050 car was a Pink Line train right?
ChicagoNova
That's pretty cool that 5050 car was a Pink Line train right? It read "Not In Service", but I'm just about certain it was going to the 54th Rail Yard.
artthouwill
A four car consist went out today for Training Day. Car 5014 led, with car 5013, 5022, and 5021 on the back end. It left 54th immediately after the train I was on.
BusHunter
There are at least twelve 5000s at 54th right now - if not more. 5015-5016, 5019-5020, 5039-5040, 5043-5046, 5049-5050. And yes, as multiple people have seen and reported, more cars are being delivered to Skokie frequently. There are at least 6 more cars at Skokie now (5001-02, 5021-5022, 5053-54), but likely more than that. I recently spotted #5037-38 in the 54th yard. And #5001-02, #5013-14, #5021-22 are there too, as mentioned above. I'm not sure of #5053-54 (maybe or it's still at Skokie) If you count what we both reported that's 20 to 22 cars. I'm trying to figure out what are the rest of them. As far as the total number there, all I seem to see are the (4) four car sets and #5001-02 which was parked in front of a 6 car string of #2600's in the back of the yard. Behind the shop seems to be #2400's work cars. BTW, I also recently spotted this week a 6 car string of #2200's at Skokie Shops. (#2231-32, #2275-76 and #2297-98) Don't know if there coming back to the blue or not.
pace2322
What is the big deal about more junk coming to Cta.. Why does everone think because its new its better.. Go drive one of our low 1000s.. And see then...
Mr.cta85
So it's been about a few weeks now does anybody know if the 5000's are in revenue service soon?
Busjack
What is the big deal about more junk coming to Cta.. It might be the most thoroughly tested junk ever. On the other hand, given CTA's record, Claypool lying about giving the go ahead, stonewalling of the FOIA request, and that they aren't in revenue service yet, maybe there is something as redolent as Pepi Le Pew all over suburban highways. railfan4072
Today is the big day for the 5000s. Despite an unexpected twist with the announcement today, the first revenue trip will be on the Pink Line. Cars will be assigned to Green and Red, in that order, after Pink Line has its allotment. Pink should be all 5000s by the end of the year or early 2012, unless something unexpected happens with deliveries. Red will start getting the cars by mid 2012.
Busjack
Cars will be assigned to Green and Red, in that order, after Pink Line has its allotment. ... Of course this has been "reported" several times, but what is the reason for Green getting them, considering that Blue has more passenger load and older cars? Do they really have to replace the 2400s before 2200s? Of course, since the people in charge (especially the person claiming to be in charge) don't know what they are doing, I guess this is not surprising. MetroShadow
Definitely big news to say the least, although I am not shocked that Red is getting them over Blue. But good news anyway.
trainman8119
Not all surprising....Red=Rham...Rham's people along the Red. I am actually surprised Rham's people didn't get all the new equipment from the start. As far as I am concerned, they can look at each other as much as they want. BusHunter
I'm not surprised the next cars went to red, I just hope they get all the slow zones fixed or they may have a fast 70 MPH car on a 15 MPH track. No doubt now there going to up the speed of that line once things get fixed. As far as the blue line, I'm starting to wonder if the blue line may get the cars last, with the last option being for airport express cars. If somehow the option can't be altered, they may have to make those airport type cars like #3180 - #3200 once were, but that may be in the plans anyway considering the last cars could be a little different. Rodriguez had said that the option was going to be changed. As far as one can tell, there is no chance of an airport express as it was conceived in 2006, in that Huberman mothballed the shell of a tunnel and Daley went off on his maglev fantasy. According to chicago-l.org, the current assignment sheets for Pink, Green, and Red get you to 500. Then you have your rumors of Pink going to 6 cars, and the Red Line extension needing an additional 84 or so. So, at that point, you are up to 650,* and whatever the doubletalk on fleet expansion, you don't have the 310 left needed to stock the Blue Line. Of course, by 2013, the successor to the successor of current management may change its mind. __________ *Corrected.
Kevin
Looks like the cars are being unveiled at Midway. Mayor's Office just checked in there on Foursquare.
Busjack
Looks like the cars are being unveiled at Midway. Mayor's Office just checked in there on Foursquare. Thanks. One thing I knew for sure, is that even though the cars are at 54th, he wasn't going to Cicero to have the press conference there. I also bet that Claypool will be standing in the background, as apparently (1) he doesn't know the cars are there, according to the first statement he gave to Hilkevitch, and (2) apparently he is only trusted to give the "give back" speech. Busjack
Press release is live. Also the first time they said any federal funds were involved, but 10% is sure a departure from the past. Looks like the next time a fare increase is proposed, the reason will be that the sales tax (I assume RTA sales tax) is pledged to the $1 billion in bonds. It's like I mentioned about the Brown gets 5000's and their old stock gets dispersed, only difference here is the 2400's on the Green Line retired, sans the work cars(I think they'll be kept at Skokie for Work Car service), the 2600's from the Green Line will go to the Blue Line to start retirement of the 2200's, and the remaining 2200's will be retired off by an equal number of Red Line 2600's, making the Blue Line an all 2600-Series route.
