It may be a while before any other 1000s retire. With some of the 2008 and 09 models having rust issues who knows what the future will hold up for these.

Yea the 1000's will only be retired due to like a crash with major damage a motor or Trans blow maybe electrical issue or a fire

It's generally been that way at CTA. Usually a combination of:

  • An excessive number of buses being eligible for retirement at the same time (last of 1000s and 4000-4049s delivered in 2009). Last time any effort was made to stagger a delivery was 2002.
  • Pending orders supposed to eliminate a series, but not enough to do so (i.e. Novas were not enough to eliminate Americanas, 7900-8349 not enough to eliminate all 6400s).

Thus, I agree that the 1000s won't be retired in any particular order, and the ones not worth fixing (like those pictured without engines) won't be fixed. While there might be certain drop dead deadlines (such as New Looks eliminated in 1995 and Flx Metros when Archer closed and the fleet was cut by 300 buses), CTA may face a similar "cliff," if the electric bus transition plan runs into hiccups. I can't see the NF buses lasting 20 years (into 2029). There are limits on when CTA can get parts to rehab buses that old.

Which leads me to wonder about the upgraded shields and clever cabs getting installed on the random 100+ flyers both 40-60 foot combined over the past several months. Does the minor upgrades negate the fact that a bus with a newer shield and other upgrades will be put on the backburner for retirement or is everything still fare game at this point? It reminds me of the #6000s retirement phase when most if not all of the un-rehabbed #6000s were retired in droves over the course of 2 years until 2010 while anything else rehabbed was retired sporadically over time. After seeing what I saw over the past several months at SS some of the 2007-2008 models out of C,K & NP are eligible for retirement. The 2009 models should be the last block to get pushed towards retirement since a good chunk are 09 models. 2006 through early 2007 models from 74th,77th,103rd & FG are flying under the radar and I'm shocked that there isn't more of that block of buses sitting in the boneyard but regardless the retirements are coming sooner rather than later and I just some of these #1000s can get one last mileage swap before the end of the year.

What @Busjack mentioned before about the carbon steel frames of buses 1639 and up is very relevant.   I had noted the high number of these buses in the boneyard compared to the ONE  bus under 1630 that was there.  It's not uncommon for buses to reach a 20 year service life in CTA service  so I wouldn't write off the 2006 and 2007 1000 series New Flyers anytime soon.

CTA may be forced to carry a bloated bus fleet until they can find suitable replacements for the entire New Flyer fleet.

Exactly like we already seen how they did other series and with the novas they just let them kill themselves & the fire with 6860 is what really sealed the 6400 fate less then 10 came back but mostly as spares

Finally found the where abouts of 1948, it is also on LTH now.It still has its farebox and ventra reader though but is missing other components as of right now, #1697 has been stripped of its ventra reader and farebox among other parts but it is also placed on LTH along with the rest of this batch of buses its sitting with. Some of seat fabric covers have also been getting removed as well from what I've seen. I guess whatever is still good for usage can get used on other buses or thrown out entirely.

It basically depends on what CTA's distinction is between LTH and SCRAP, the latter painted onto buses headed out of the yard. However, it is consistent with the prior discussion of Cannibalized. Apparently, these buses have significant enough structural defects that they are being stripped for parts. The Ventra readers are being reallocated, and historically the fareboxes have been, too (CTA had not purchased new fareboxes for 30 years and I guess the Scheidt & Bachmann fareboxes aren't ready yet). The odds are none of these buses is coming back. At least we know what the yellow stickers mean.

100 or more should be on receipt of 8450-8549, but, due to necessity, it appears backward. It looks like the solicitation to scrap 101 buses is a couple of a hundred short.

#1197 will be active again soon, bus looks brand new practically. I saw it moving around the shops area a few minutes ago. I wonder if we'll take it or will it get sent to 103rd.

Well that's good they are keeping that alive

I feel that those 6400s may be back there for a minute. From the looks of it is that no one is seems interested in purchasing them for scrap maybe there could be rebidding back to back don’t take my word for it I may be wrong either way.

So I think it's finally time I made a separate topic in regards to the #1000s retirements process as it seems to be slowly underway. I've already compiled a list of what's on the chopping block based on what I've seen. So far my count has surpassed 53 which does include various buses with wreck/fire damage. The second list consists of buses recently removed from service for more than several months and did return for a short time but later went back OOS.
