Looks like the 9 Ashland bus is being extended to Lawrence & Ravenswood Metra.

I felt like a northern extension was needed  but I don't know if Lawrence abd Ravenswood station does much.  It should improve service on the 9 during days the Cubs are playing

I wonder if the 9 should have been extended to Clark/Arthur and cut the 50 Damen toFoster and Ashland and possibly serve the Ravenswood Metra station

Never really figured the #9 needed to go as far as Devon since the #22 runs pretty much adjacent to the street of Ashland between Montrose & Edgewater. Usually figured maybe the #50 would probably get that extension one day. Sure that bakery on the corner right next the terminal wish that used as a bus stop… maybe 💁‍♂️😅

So I just got done reading an article about there possibly being an extension in the works for the #9 that would change the current northern terminal. The proposed change would have the #9 continue North past Irving Park to the Ravenswood Metra Station just south of Lawrence Ave. IMG_2686.thumb.png.4f89102fbf7619fd9c09d6b8062dcbfb.png

I mean for reverse commuters that's fine and all but apparently a lot of people like @jajuan rely on the 22 connection which will be lost if this happens. Smarter move might've been via Irving, Clark, Wilson to the ravenswood station to help out with both

I'm totally for this!! Extending #9 Ashland to the Metra station would provide a more direct connection to the station than #22 Clark.

It's not the worst walk in the world, but by that same metric, might as well close the gap.

The /r post, when magnified, shows a loop via Wilson, Ravenswood, (east of the tracks), and Lawrence. But leaves:

  • Does this include X9? If yes, that would lose the connection to continue nort on the Red Line. If no, afternoon service would be only every 10-14 minutes. (Note: typed while the above posts were pending,)
  • I had previously suggested improving 22 Clark service by running it via Irving Park, Ashland, to maybe Foster. I would not run 9 via Clark because Clark is less navigable and the east side would only generate ridership from the ghosts in Graceland Cemetery.

Short walk to Clark from Leland through chase park, that’s mhm recommendation for people who need to connect to the 22 as it’s a short walk and Chase park looks nice for a short walk

It's a 3/8ths of a mile walk from the Ravenswood Metra station to Clark & Lawrence.  This old guy has to stop & catch his breath every block to make that walk.

There are times I'd like to see the 50 Damen extended to Clark/Arthur.

I saw the Streetblog article about it just now, and from the look of the map the quick walk over to the turnaround point, won't be too bad. But a couple of seniors who I normally see in the morning might have an issue especially in winter months.

Actually looking a little closer, I see there would be a southbound stop at Lawrence and Ashland. So it wouldn't even be necessary to walk to Ravenswood. I think the bigger issue for some would be making the transfer in the reverse because at that point, yes it would require the walk between the station and Clark Street.

I also saw that the impetus for this was the desire for a new layover spot following the the completion of the enclosed bike lane on Clark. I came see this because, even though the bike lane construction has been finished for almost six months, CTA never ended the detour of Ashland buses on to Belle Plaine. And that was in fact due to the buses having a narrower space to try negotiating that left turn from Clark on to Southport.

Since Ravenswood is already one of the busiest Metra stations outside of downtown, wouldn't it have made more sense to direct any new traffic to the Peterson station?  I mean they spent good money building the thing, might as well send additional traffic to it and relieve some of the load at Ravenswood.  All of the Metra UP-N trains stop at Peterson as well as Ravenswood.

How soon would this extension go into effect? It would make sense for the X9 to remain the same as it connects to the busiest L line in the system. I think the drivers on the 9 would love not having to deal with Cubs traffic anymore. Also I realized 6 has the longest bus routes I wonder how they manage it.

More than likely the Fall Pick you'll see the new extension to go into effect.

The amount of people transferring btwn the 9 & Metra isn't likely to be high, especially for reverse commuters. The alderman announcement didn't even mention the Metra connection, just the jobs/housing in the area and the 78/81 connection.

Outside of community requests for service along Ashland north of Irving Park, I wonder if another impetus for this move was likely a search for available layover space after the Clark Ave bike lane project. I know they left room for CTA buses to continue laying over, but I wonder if that got more constrained. The project was only just completed Nov/Dec of last year.

The streetsblog article was updated to say that it is happening in "late summer" so whatever day the next pick is - I believe that would be in August.

So CTA should likely be giving the effect date for the extension during the meeting on Thursday then, yes?

More than likely yes, the Fall Pick would be the tentative start date which would be the first Monday of the new CPS school year.

First day of CPS shool year is tentatively dated for Monday, Aug 26, 2024. So the 2024 Fall Bus Pick will be tentatively set for Sunday Aug 25th, 2024.

You are correct my friend, Summer Picks are usually the shortest while the Winter Picks are the longest.
