6000-series Flxible - Retirements

Well, I guess we can still blame Frank for the apparent NABI mess, since it would

have been on his watch. Was there not some talk about how CTA steered the contract

towards NABI ???

As for the Busjack's referral to junk. I agree that by 2014, the 6000s could be on

duct tape and glue. But, there is something to be said about old vs new and how

it seems that as technology allegedly advances quality seems to wane. Old GMs

Flxibles and the such seemed so much better built that the garbage out there now.

Same applies to rail cars too.

Stuff always seems better in our memories, and earlier in their service lives than at the end. Also, the new buses are much more complicated (ADA stuff, computerized engine control, antipollution devices, etc.). There is a reason for 5750's observation that New Looks seen in movies come from collections.

With the apparent demise of these buses, makes you really wonder about making your entire fleet a single maker. God forbid if something really bad surfaces with the New Flyers (although it appears they are pretty much holding up okay up to now).
However, if we take BusExpert's lead that busfan was right, we also have to take at face value his garage gossip that the Kedzie DE60LFs had warning lights light Christmas trees, the 103 ones couldn't leave the garage (at least until they showed up on BusTracker on route 6), and New Flyer delivers buses without working brakes. Which would take us back to your point.... Especially if CTA committed to NF when they could have waited a couple of months and have a Nova with a high rear vent.

Amen to that!

Although through the different models of GM's the 5301 and 5303's were better built then the 5307's at the end. GM started building them on the cheap/cutting corners to compete with Flxible and AM General

Man u should be glan u dont live in Canada then! U wolud have 8000+ post then with all the old buses up there! u be up there doing this i bet!

As you see proper grammar and spelling is not a prerequisite for getting hired at CTA... Heck, you don't need to know that to transfer buses from garage to garage!

I said that he was right about the NABI situation, not all of this New Flyer gossip. Well, in my opinion, I expect all 299 6000s to still be on the active roster once again come Bushunter's February retirement update, and the NABI count to be under 200 after what I've seen and heard, but we must wait.....

  • 4 months later...

There are no new retirements as far as I know...

I thought I'd bring this topic more closer to the 1st page since the 6000-Series are being retired gradually, so no new threads are started about it when the chicagobus.org members start mentioning more retirements, which I will deduct from the lists on page 1.

Late last year Bushunter reported that there were 299 6000 Flxibles still in service, but last month ttmg.org reported that were 300 in active service. Has the amount of 6000s actually gone up by one, or was there a mistake somewhere?

rideonrulez is right. The official count is 293 - and it has been since April 15.

ttmg.org's site has some merits, but it's not the definitive tracker of CTA fleet counts. Its May 23 fleet roster was already over a month out-of-date when it was posted in May.

Does anyone know how many of the 293 Flxibles are at each of the five garages?

My records show:-

Forest Glen -104

74th - 79

Kedzie - 54

103rd - 32

Chicago - 24

From what I can see, POSSIBLY a couple of those gone came from K and a few from 74th. I last remember K's number at about 56 or 57, and 74th's at 80-something (this number being after the switch of 6000s from 74th to 103rd). It's hard to say for sure with the minor swaps that were noticed by a few of us within the last week or so.

Judging by current viewings of BusTracker, I don't believe that the recent minor swaps included any of the 6000s.

Based on the late-May roster updates as well as BusTracker, here's my somewhat educated guess (it pretty much concurs with Jajuan's last message): One retirement from Kedzie, and five from 74th (more Cummins-equipped Flxes maybe???).

Correct. Except as of today, 74th is down to 78 ( 6274 was retired in the most recent roster)

I'm showing 299 on my obviously outdated rosters on pg. 1. I'm going to need your help finding which six need to be removed... look at the lists and tell me which six to remove.

Not sure how this jibes with your list, but these are the last six 6000s that were retired (plus 6274 from today)

6312 & 6320 from 74th

6027 from Kedzie

6318 From 74th

6306 From 74th

6305 from 74th

The 6000s roster as of today (per the roster that CTA distributes to staff and affected vendors):

From what I can gather, the newly retired (since my last list in Dec 2008) include #6027 from Kedzie and #6274, #6305, #6306, #6312, #6318 and #6320. That's seven buses taking us from 299 to 292. Here's my updated retired list for 6/09. #6003, #6016, #6027, #6071, #6078, #6088, #6089, #6098, #6110, #6111, #6115, #6116, #6143, #6146, #6185, #6198, #6203, #6210, #6226, #6235, #6274, #6276, #6295, #6301, #6305, #6306, #6307, #6309, #6311, #6312, #6313, #6314, #6315, #6317, #6318, #6319, #6320 and #6325. That would leave us at 292 left. That would mean only 11 Cummins are left out of those 292. I have a feeling that when the new artics arrive (#4150 - #4207) we'll be saying more like 200 will be left.

The question is what they are supposed to replace. If NABIs, that will barely be enough to do the job (in that you said that there were about 200 NABIs left between when you reported those off the active roster until all were pulled). Of course, there could also be the argument that we have as many as 292 or 293 Flxs (non curat de minimis) because a bigger fleet is necessary to cover for the missing NABIs on routes such as some 140s. That might explain why K has a bigger allotment of Flxs now than the about 40 it got with the 1122-1161 swap (the additional ones being those 6081 and over).

My guess is that we'll have to get into the mini-capital bill allotment (175-200?) to really put a dent into the number of 6000s.

As usual, we will just have to wait and see.

...

Kedzie - 54

...

As noted above, K is up.

FG, while getting some from Chicago, seems down from the about 128 it had say about a year ago. There were reports that it lost some as a result of having to supplement other garages to fill in for the NABI debacle, but got some back. However, 104 would seem to leave them still short. Did they get back some Novas?

Your updated list of retirement buses does not include 6274 which would take it from 293 to 292.

It does, so the search for the other one continues.

There was, of course, the previous quibble (this post and following) whether the prior list was 299 or 300. BusHunter was consistent that 299-7=292.
