BusHunter
Whoa!! Every lower seat insert (where the derriere goes) has been replaced on #6519 with brand new seat inserts. Impressive!! #6503 next?? Maybe??

In some cases the bus don't start acting up until you're on the road in service. You can Pre trip the bus 2wice and it be good but once you're on the street then it decides it wanna act up lol. Ahhhh I see, however I was bugged by it because I just boarded the bus and as soon as the driver accelerated the transmission made a loud whine with a ticking sound and the bus jerked as soon as the driver decelerated and that's when the announcement was made lol, I had a ride for less than 50ft  . jajuan
That is quite some variation between series of novas, I just don't understand it. What's less understandable is the recent swap of highest numbered 6400 series Novas from FG for mid-range numbered buses of the series previously assigned to 74th when 74th is now the current garage receiving Smart Buses.
BusHunter
Maybe the plan is to retire #6800's from 74th as crazy as that sounds because they have nothing else to retire except maybe 22 of the pre #6709's.

I had a similar thought in light of the last remaining 4400s left when that series was finally retired were 4774, 4592 and 4579, and the last remaining 5300s were one 53xx, one 57xx, along with a handful each of 5400s, 5500s and 5600s. In both of those cases most of the highest numbers of the series were retired before the middle fleet numbers. It was actually similar with the Americanas, so there is precedent for that pattern of retirements.
YoungBusLover
I understand in some aspect and some retirement patterns have been different in most recent years but Why not retire high mileage and garage dog buses first? rather than retire random buses at will. Unless theirs a reason for them to be retired and something we don't know about. If only the #6400's got there rehabs several years back if in fact there was money to perform such an action. The issue is that those on the outside don't know which ones are the garage dogs, while CTA does have the computerized maintenance records, and presumably retires the worst buses first. But I can't see that as the rationale for packing 74th with 6800s, Going into history, there was also the somewhat inexplicable retirement of 5800s before a good number of the 4400s and 5300s, especially since the 5800s got complete rebuilds at Inland Detroit Diesel, while the 4400s got light life extending rehabs and the 5300s didn't get anything.
garmon757
Well, this is interesting. I'm riding #6811 right now and it has the updated Clever Device. Did anybody else see one on the other ones?

Did anybody else see one on the other ones? Not yet, but this might be like the 5300's getting the next stop automated announcements and Mr. CTA route announcements. They were originally not supposed to due to how close to retirement they were, but they got them anyway. Another thought... it could just be for those that are going to be around for at least most or all of 2015 and a part of 2016(if the 6400's are extended in revenue service that long). If true, 6811 will be one of those around for a while, perhaps most or all of the 6800's and 6700's too. I don't know about the 6600's. I think the 6400's and 6500's will be pretty much a write-off once 7900-8199 are in here fully.

Which brings the thought that if the new Clever Devices system is supposed to replace the Orbital one (as Mr.cta85 said), they are going to need compatible equipment in whatever buses remain. That equipment can be transferred to new buses as the old ones are retired.

Along with Busjack's point, it also strengthens the question of why they moved the 6800s and some upper 6700s to 74th when 74th is receiving the second big group of 7900s. Them increasing the number of rehabbed NFs assigned to 74th makes it pretty unlikely they'll knock all NFs if any off 74th's roster. It just comes back to Bushunter's point that they moved a bunch of first Gen Novas out of FG to 74th only to move them again in the coming months. It just comes back to Bushunter's point that they moved a bunch of first Gen Novas out of FG to 74th only to move them again in the coming months. Talking with the operators from FG, they claim that the #6600's are in the worst shape. Some of the problems include missing governors, slow buses and jumping out of gear. They seem to be saying what Andre reported that they know which buses these are and are keeping a log on them. The #6400's from 74th are worse yet and they tend to be keeping those at the garage, but if they are needed, out they go. The #6500's from 77th are basically fixed from their earlier issues. The strongest buses seem to be the #6700's that have always been at the glen, (#6756-#6793) followed by the ex-Chicago amber buses. I don't know why they did the 74th/FG swap. The only answer i can come up with is the #6600 buses are basically shot and they are sending them someplace with alot of downtime so they can get their last 6 months out of them. With the #8000's coming in strong, by spring they should be starting to send the #6700's back and these 74th buses will probably be going. If they are shot as bad as they are proclaimed, I don't see why they would pump in resources to fix them but it's probably just enough to buy some time and keep them running. I think FG will start receiving #1000's by the summer as that's when Chicago should start getting #8100's and they will have nowhere to send the #1000's they purge. Then probably FG will get the #8200 - #8349 bus option. So while at the oldest point now, FG should be gettng newer buses from here on out. Although they do seem to be behind on retiring buses if you look at the 30 something that's gone compared to the 130 they have received. That must be due to the #1000's rehab, and when that's done there should be mega retiring.
Mr.cta85
It could also be a possibility that 74th won't get 100 new Novas maybe just 50 or so for now. I only said that cause some of the 6800's they got from FG have 6 stickers inside of them. So those will be there for a while.

Its been a min since I had a bus with one the last bus I had like that was a 1800, I believe it was 1847 or 49 can't quite remember. It either way it still had the updated clever device installed just not in the upper left corner like they are now

That doesn't mean anything. 74th had NFs which they got from 77th and other places before the recent mass swaporama which they placed the '6' stickers on and those NFs ended up only being there for just a few weeks. So it's still very possible that like 77th, 74th may get 100 of the 7900 series assigned. About the only those stickers mean is that they'll possibly be there as long as may be needed before they're displaced by the newer model Novas. Well, the subject of the thread is "6400 series...Retirements" and apparently some of them getting new Clever Devices indicates that they are not being retired that quickly (again, similar to the 5300s getting the announcement system after CTA said they were not).
