Thanks RJL!! I'll switch over #1261 too, but it's probably a loaner. I don't think it has officially changed garages (by roster)

If we see it on NP routes far more than just yesterday (when I saw in on the 148 in the afternoon rush) and today, we'll have a far better idea of it's more than just a loan.

This how I would format the New Flyer D40LF Roster:

1000-1039 103rd | 1040-1099 Chicago | 1100-1159 74th | 1160-1229 Kedzie | 1230-1299 Forest Glen |

1300-1429 North Park | 1430-1499 Chicago | 1500-1544 103rd | 1545-1599 74th | 1600-1729 Kedzie |

1730-1759 74th | 1760-1799 North Park | 1800-1899 103rd | 1900-1929 Chicago | 1930-2029 77th |

Chicago 158 total x-1468 and 1482 | Forest Glen 70 total | Kedzie 200 total | North Park 169 total x-1305 |

74th 145 total | 77th 100 total | 103rd 185 total | Grand total 1,027 |

But its not accurate. For example, Forest Glen doesnt hold 1230-1299, some are at 103rd and 77th holds 1283-1303. Then there are even odd splits here and there

It's just a "this is my ideal roster" idea, Sam92. He even said it's not real when he said "This is how I would format the New Flyer D40LF Roster".

If i decided the rosters, I would make all garages have 60 novas and 2/3's nf's and the novas would just go out in the rush. This way repairs to old buses would be low.

The question then becomes whatever theory Huberman had to consolidate series in garages supposedly to cut down maintenance turnaround.* That goes from the days when Archer was at least half NF, converted to all Nova (let alone whatever theory made 74 all 6000s for a short period).

Clearly, several garages (103, K, NP) have remained virtually Nova-free.

Also, at this point, there doesn't seem to be much point in conserving most of the Novas, since sw is itchy in getting the replacements soon. With at least routes 66 and 79 converted to artics, I'm surprised there haven't been retirements already.

*Not much different at Pace in that the only mixed Orion VI/NABI garage is West.

Makes some sense considering they're operating on a 100 bus surplus. But to implement it you'd probably have to have every artic on the road and quite possibly in use on routes that don't justify artic use. But as Busjack pointed out and I mentioned a couple of times before, with 66 and 79 converted over to heavy artic use, and a few extra Chicago routes and 77th routes seeing limited artic use in some form (during rush hour for Chicago), it's surprising they haven't started retiring any Novas beyond the six already off the roster. It pretty much makes more sense to start doing that instead.

Words in the mouth again, Busjack. I made no such reference that I want to rid of them... what I said is the prototype should've been here in 2013, not 2014. That's what the CTA said in it's release announcing Nova as the contract winner for the 300 buses*. Prototypes typically arrive the year prior to the rest so the CTA can view the built model and make changes to anything they don't like about their future fleets. As I said about the New Flyer D40LF buses, it's prototype(#1000) arrived 11/8/05 to be viewed and introduced by CTA brass, with #1001 on up starting to roll in 2/xx/06.

*=300 confirmed in contract with Nova. Option for another 150 available if CTA chooses to exercise it.

That's kind of an interesting debate. Would the agency save more money not running buses 24/7 that are 12 years old versus paying to have all garages have old buses. Personally I think it's wrong to segregate newer buses at always the same spot because some parts of the city hardly ever get any new equipment. Like say for instance FG. The only new buses they have had since 2003 have been 10 Optimas. Where 103rd has received new about 100 #1400's/1500's; and the last 200 #1000's. Add in the #4000's, about 30-40 and the #4300's, about 60 and you have a new bus comparison of 10 versus about 400 buses. Same can be said about rail. Again the same parts of the city get the perks and the other parts get what's left. How can they justify putting all new train cars on one line and leaving the line with the oldest equipment again with the oldest equipment? The excuse of coupling different series trains together doesn't hold water because what are they doing now like on the red line?

That seems to be the drawback of the theory, which is just coming home to roost now. In the FG case, it was way under the usual average age when it got the Novas, in that it had swapped its 5300s for 6000s from K, and K really didn't get even age wise until it got the 1600s. At the time of receiving the Novas, the other garages were half Nova and half 5300s, more or less.

Anyway, I already predicted that a good chunk of the next bunch of Novas go to FG, although that seems tempered by how many of Option 2 (the ones with the orange signs) have already been swapped.

But as far as "coming home to roost," it basically is that only 74, 77, C, and FG need to replace Novas, and some of 77s and C's are being replaced with artics. Otherwise, one is talking about incessant bus swaps. Pace is now in a similar situation, as maybe 100 of the next group of buses to be replaced are at NW.

On the L (and 74th before 2009) the question comes down to whether the old stuff will perpetually be there, or there will be a procurement for the 7000s (which, if we were to believe press releases. should have been announced by now). Obviously, though, the Red Line can't be all 5000s until maybe another 160 are received.

Hmm. I think FG has usually been on the better end of the new bus deal. Granted it got some hand me down NFs, but before the Optimas it got the last bunch of Novas. FG also received NEW 5300s, then got them swapped a few years later with 6000s (though not brand new, were newer than what they gave up). And of course, let's not forget everyone's (except me) favorite 9800 and 1600 series Flyers.

Seemingly due to space restraints, it may prove difficult to assign artics to FG. You can rest assured that FG will get the new Novas, and if history is any indication, they will get the most and the last set of them.
