I wouldnt want to be in that car. Is there no way to lock out a car from being in service until it could be cleaned?

Nah. Doing so would only cause major delays.

It's possible to lock out individual doors on a car, and has been done when someone overruns a platform. Problem is, the operator would have to walk to the affected car if it's not an overrun incident. From what I've heard, big messes are just attended to by cleaning people.

They are really working fast on these red line #5000 LED interior installations. Out of 224 cars my list says they have finished over half of them or 114 cars and that's in only 40 days from March 9th. At this rate looks like they'll be done easy by the end of May. Cars completed so far are:

#5147-50, #5153-54, #5157-58, #5163-64, #5167-68, #5171-76, #5179-#5200, #5207-08, #5215-20, #5223-24, #5229-30, #5245-46, #5251-52, #5257-64, #5269-72, #5279-80, #5283-88, #5291-92, #5295-96, #5299-#5306, #5311-20, #5325-26, #5329-30, #5337-38, #5351-54, #5357-60, #5365-66

I just saw 5159-5160 earlier at Howard; it looked like they had just gotten a wash. It wasn't raining but they were wet and very shiny. It also looked like they had been towed by a 2400-2600 consist, as the 5000 consist was no more than 5 feet away from the older one until they moved it away. I got a picture of 5160:

Today while doing the 29 I saw 5001-5002 in service for the 1st since delivery and out made me think wow they are part of the 1st 12 prototypes then it hit me those cars are already 5yrs Old considering they been here since 09

Actually, they weren't. The prototypes were 5003-12; 5001 and 5002 were held back at Bombardier.

I don't know if the 5000 specs are the same as the 7000, but the 7000 says that the prototypes are to be selected from a couple of more that are the first production.

See chicago-l.org's 5000s page under "Prototype Units."

What were 5001-2 held back for? When were they put in service on the actual L?

Also I meant to post the other day when I saw it, but a few days ago I saw an out-of-service brown line in the loop with a green light on one of the cars. I've never seen the green light before...what does that mean?

Garmon757 and I might have brought up that light in the Random CTA thread. Where was the light on the train?
