CTA 'L' Rosters

CTA seems to be laying up #2600 cars at Rosemont yard, out by the stored #2200's. I saw 2 the other day and now 4. The blue line still seems to be getting cars even though the #2200's have been replaced. I put #2779-80 up today. I wonder if they plan on replacing the stored #2200's slowly with these cars. In other words, 44 more #2600 cars are destined for Rosemont to obtain a "floatable" extra fleet. That would put close to the number of #2600's left on the Red line on the other lines (Orange, Blue and Purple) and when the Purple line starts to get #5000's, they will then start replacing/storing #2600's. Check out the math: 248 #2600 cars left on the Red line. 44 to Blue line, 100-110 to the Purple line, 60-70 cars to Orange line leaving about 20-30 extra cars that may be able to slide in here and there.

2751-2752 is on the Blue Line now.

Thought i might have seen #2757-58 on the blue line, but I'm not sure. The last transfer though was just about all #2700's. Maybe some of the #2600's on the red line have some kind of special function that they do like being a sleet fighter. I don't know if the #5000's have yet been equipped with special equipment on the Red line yet. They recently transferred two #2200's to Skokie shops. I don't know if that was #2273-74 or #2303-04. #2304 got vandalized like #2273-74 about 6 weeks ago and needs to go. They have been trying there best though to keep it covered blocking it with other trains in Rosemont yard.

Based on reports in connection with the Red Line South reopening that it would be about 44% 5000s, if the old allocation of 382 cars holds up, the Red Line would still need about 200 2600s. By the same token, if the old allocation of 344 cars to the Blue Line still holds, counting down from 3201 would get the start at 2857. Of course, 12 Blue Line cars are now out of service (at least those for the obvious reason), and 2600s might be scattered somewhere else, but I doubt that the assumption that everything over 2700 is on the Blue Line is correct.

That would also jive with your observation that there are about 330 5000s in service, but 154 would be needed for the Pink and Green Lines, leaving about 176 in service on the Red Line (approximations, of course).

The numbers in bold are probably what you meant here. The 2600's end with 3199-3200 and the 3200's begin with 3201-3202.

No. L car sets start with the odd number. Then you count down from the first number of the next series.

Thus, no set starts with 2856, unless there is a mismatch.

Remember the 16 car transfer I was talking about. Well those were mostly #2700's. I never said the whole fleet of #2700's came over. (at least that's what it sounds like your saying) A few of the 12 cars are back I saw #3167-68 last week.

On the #5000's beat, CTA wants the red line all #5000's, so that leaves half of the Orange line with #5000's and #2600's for spares, which seems acceptable. (The #2400's now are barely out there on the Orange line) Or fully equipping the Orange line with #5000's with no #5000's on the Purple line which I doubt because when they pull out cars from Howard those are usually #2600's or the few #2400's that are working, but some of those have atc issues. Look for the orange looking tag on the car ends on the grab handles to discern which cars have this problem. I believe that's called "Red Tagging" or at least that's what I was told.

Today while passing 98th yard I saw a 5000 series coupled with a 2600 in a six car consist with 4 2600's and of course the 5000 on the end. My guess is the 5k probably broke down for a lack of words. But it was a cool sight to see from a rail fan perspective.

Deffinately something rare :D

Spotted #2885-86 on the blue line yesterday. That was the first new car from the red line in months. I don't know if it's a replacement for #2639 which was involved in the chair fire out at rosemont or not, but I haven't seen it since that happened. It kind of makes me wonder if maybe the santa cars may come to the blue line. I have yet to see those since Xmas.

Since the Santa cars reportedly are not going back to the Yellow Line, are there any stable assignments of cars there?

sw4400 indicates on his roster that 5155-5160 in addition to 2899-2900 have been operating on the Yellow Line at least since Christmas eve. Seems reasonably stable.
