Why the Pink ? I understand they want a small isolated line, but so is the Purple, it is near Skokie shops, and once the cars can be trusted to behave themselves, they can confidently scrap cars, they can segway to the Red, bumping the 2600's to the Blue.

54th/Cermak has spare capacity at present. It is possible to have a full set of new and old cars there at the same time. Howard does not have any spare capacity.

Problem with Purple is that while it has 80-90 cars assigned to it, most are only for the express, or about 6 hours a weekday. It sure would be wasteful to have only maybe 16 cars on full time shuttle service, with 70 or so brand new expensive cars sitting in the yards (Linden and Howard) most of the time. At least car demand over the week is more level on the Pink line.

Also, most Purple express trains consist of a couple of cars coming up from Howard coupled with 4 cars sitting at Linden. Consider all that coupling and uncoupling, and then introducing an incompatible car into that mix. I'm sure someone is going to tell me that there were single units and 4000s in 1970, but they must have staged them differently than they do now.

According to the Tribune, we now have 26 cars on hand that will be in service VERY soon after they make a few final tweaks.

We get another piece of duplicity to the press on the part of a CTA Executive Director:

CTA President Forrest Claypool gave the go-ahead in July for Bombardier to begin production, CTA and Bombardier officials said, although Claypool told reporters as recently as Oct. 13 that final approval had not been authorized because minor issues with the new trains were still being worked out.

No doubt those 10 cars previously unmentioned were at Skokie last week. According to Artthouwill's report for Friday, he reported the same amount of cars (16) I reported the week before, so 54th didn't receive anything last week. When the time comes to put them in service, I wouldn't be surprised if the #2600's were kept around on Pink until they were sure of the #5000 cars as they gradually work the new trains in. If the trains do continue to go to lines with not much demand, I wouldn't be surprised if they ended up on the Purple after the Green Line gets there cars. It all depends on there confidence level. They wouldn't want the cars to screw up in the middle of a major line. BTW, some of the tribune column does mention old news if you watch this youtube link, which dates back to the end of September. The original prototypes have been in transit for some time now.

Today I rode on a 2600 series Green Line train, lead car 3015. The maps over the doors were Green Line maps (in the past 2600s on the Green Line had the Blue Line maps). I don't know for sure, but it seems like this set is permanently assigned to Green now. I don't know of any retirements of the 2400 series or the 2200s for that matter. But if the Blue Line lost six cars, could any 2600s from the Pink replace them, seeing as though Pink appears to be going 5000s soon? BTW, no 5000s spotted in service as yet.

Was it a solid 6car or 2600's or just the 2 lead cars? And I also want to know will the Green Line be fully equipped with 5000's or will there be a mixtures of 5000's and 2600 series cars of course not trained together but on that same which would make sense.

Is it just me or are the Brown Line 8 cars trains starting to overcrowd. I had to let a train pass yesterday due to overcrowding. I actually am starting to wonder if they do need the #5000's there (SW4400 says yes  ) for the higher capacity, but I'd still consider the Red line ahead of them. I don't know how the 706 cars will be split up, but it would be kind of cool if the Red, Brown got all #5000's, and the blue got the brown's #3200's and the rest #5000's after they did the Pink and Green lines. BTW, some more train cars came into Skokie on the flatbed truck. They were awaiting unloading when I spotted them. So that's good news.

I wonder what the unmentionable issues are that need to be fixed before they go into service. I know about the brakes... that was probably leaked out against the CTA's wishes.

As noted in the Tribune article cited by the CTA Tattler, whoever is now in charge of the CTA Ministry of Propaganda (note the later story on cuts made by her there) refused to answer that question, on the basis that it was exempt from disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act as proprietary data. I question that, but I guess it will become for the state Attorney General to decide whether to force them to disclose that.

So, you won't get an official explanation.

I was about to reply to the pictures of the cars being delivered that the posters "better not tell Claypool about that," but that article says that CTA officials admitted that the cars were being delivered, although "Claypool told reporters as recently as Oct. 13 that final approval had not been authorized because minor issues with the new trains were still being worked out."

Hence, before you get offended, that's why I used the term "Ministry of Propaganda." Fixed it twice when I got a squiggly line.:o

Solid 6 car 2600 consist.

The exact cars in that consist are (in numerical order) 3015-3016, 3045-3046 and 3119-3120. These six are temporarily on the Green Line because they lost six of the work-capable cars in the 2411-2424 group to nonrevenue work motor service.

Those six 2400 series cars are currently sitting in the 54th Yard. Also sighted there today besides the 16 5000 series cars are 4 additional 5000 series cars, and it appeared that it had a chance to go out this afternoon as they sat behind two 2600 4 car consists that appeared ready for P.m. rush service.

They're probably being used for the Red Line single tracks...

Found in Elmhurst: NB on Route 83 at 2:30pm near St. Charles Rd today. CTA car number 5065 and its mate(?) on their way to the Skokie shops.

That must have been the car I spotted when I was up at Skokie last week. With Artthouwill's report of two 4 car sets at 54th, with the 16 cars additional there last week, if you count this week 54th must be coming closer to 44 #5000 cars with close to 3/4 of there assigned share. (maybe they still have two weeks for completion) I wonder if they get to 44 cars before they go out in service, will they continue to send cars to that yard? The press indicates that 66 cars will be here at the end of the year. I wonder if it will end up to be more. Only time will tell.
