busfan2847
It seems as those the nova priority at 74th goes like this: 1st Tier: 9, 48, 49, 59, 94 2nd Tier: 44, 47, 55, 55A, 67 3rd Tier: 55N, 62, 62H, 63, 63W 4th Tier: 75, 165 At least 74th has their priorities straight somewhat. The Novas can seat slightly more, so 1st priority makes sense for 9 and 49. The letter routes would've all been in 3rd or 4th tier and the 48 would've been lower, while the 67 higher, had it been up to me. 7900 seat 36, 6400s seat 37 and 1000 seat 39. garmon757
And this is why I wasn't too upset about not getting a pic myself. I knew you or BusHunter might be out on the case. Maybe you mean frequency where they have been sighted before. However, 59 is a light route, and the stuff west of Midway is interlined with it. swiftsail
Hi guys, So I live in Cleveland right off I-90. Every couple weeks I see a shiny new Nova drive by headed for Chicago. Is that really how they deliver each one to CTA from their NY plant? Driving them? Seems expensive. I figured they would put each new bus on a freight train to Chicago and save on gas and driver's pay. Sorry this is slightly off-topic it just surprised me. Never have been delivered by freight train. Buses have been traditionally delivered by being driven. There was a stink when Novas were delivered in 2002 that some driver took one on a side trip to Detroit, so they were put on flatbed trucks, but that seems to have ended a long time ago. See also this post (from someone who has driven both buses and trucks) about who delivers them. At least you are confirming that they are coming via I-90 and not via Ontario 401. Didn't Cleveland's RTA have Nova's similar in appearance to CTA's 6400s? If I'm right that would have been prior to CTA getting the 6400s. NewFlyerMCI
7900 seat 36, 6400s seat 37 and 1000 seat 39. Shows what I know! Another reason why they should've gotten something else, like 150 XD or XDE40's. And change the livery, but that's another topic of discussion. And change the livery, but that's another topic of discussion. Have you done an FOIA on what NF's bid was (I assume it is available, once the contract with Nova Bus was signed)? Would it, hypothetically, been worth it to spend another $50,000 a bus, especially since CTA has proven time and again that it does not care about seat count? Would it, hypothetically, been worth it to spend another $50,000 a bus, especially since CTA has proven time and again that it does not care about seat count? Could've been worth it, but as you say, CTA doesn't care about seat count, except with the purchases of artics, so the point is moot. An XD/E 40 can seat about 42, with around 34 standing and seeing as CTA has managed to once again, partially misdistribute their artics, a new bus that can seat more than every other bus in the fleet except the artics wouldn't have hurt. What's done is done, all I'm doing is reminiscing. http://www.altoonabustest.com/buses/
andrethebusman
Just wondering, did anyone ever find out why CTA started the series with 7900 instead of 8000?Because 7800-7824 were supposed to be the NABI Compobuses back some years ago. Only 7800 ever showed up, and was returned, but the number series still exists somewhere in the computer system, so it could not be reused yet. Same as why the 5300's started with 5300, second MAN Americana order was supposed to be 5000-up, three were built but never completed, but again there were computer "traces" that were still there in 1994. The stimulus artics, with the longitudinal seats, is the essential proof that CTA doesn't care about seat count.

Doesn't answer the question though, which was why 7900 instead of 8000. And, the further one of why CTA is apparently unable to find the DELETE key. Apparently it will have to do so when rapid transit car 7800 shows up on the way to 7846 (if the contract is awarded...if the options are exercised....if hell freezes over, which it seems to be doing this week....) And I rode my first 7900 series Nova today, 8001 on the #9. And those buses only sound quieter from the outside. From the inside that Cummins ISL 9 inside those Novas sound like a cross between the 6400s' engine and that of the diesel 4300s.
