CTA 'L' Rosters

Last Friday, I was surprised to see the 2600-series making a late night appearance around 10 p.m. heading north to Howard.  It consisted of 2891-2892, 2705-2706, 2941-2942, and 2785-2786.  The graffiti has also been cleaned off of 2921-2922 in Howard yard.

No sooner did I mention about cleaning the graffiti off 2921-2922 that 2717-2718 got tagged sitting in Howard yard.

Which totally contradicts what you said before, that the Orange line will not retire any cars. It doesn't really matter if the Orange gets #5000's, they are already half #2600's and half #3200's and they can't mix those cars (for the brownages)

Not exactly. Friday, I was having ramen @ East Asian Cuisine (it is not so good) at
Van Buren and State Sts. I had a good glimpse of the elevated structure.
I definitely saw an 8-car Orange Line "L" train made up of six 2600-series cars
and two 3200-series cars.
Have we a list of what cars are now assigned to the Orange Line?

I've seen plenty of mixed consists. Even Brownages. I was at Rockwell the other day in the morning and a Brownage pulled up going to the loop. I could see down towards the rear and there was at least one pair of 2600s, if not two (and it was not 3458...that's not used for Brownages/7## runs)

Maybe they spiked your ramen. :P The orange line runs mixed consists, but it has a tendency to run mostly #2600's barring a few full strings of #3200's and a few mixed consists. Go to the first page of this thread and you will find a roster of orange line cars, but the #2600's scatter all around. I just saw #3187-88 today on the blue line.

On the Brown Line to Midway

6MF5sum.jpg

A/C on this car is either off or incredibly quiet...very eerie ride

EDIT: Figured out that it had a blue light...it was all bouncy when it stopped (with no brakes, the only thing holding it still is the link bar... O.o). Confirmed when I got off. That's probably why it had no A/C.

total 570 (plus 3458)

Which means that ~170 should see the crusher posthaste (based on the 7000s spec; maybe 142 if the LTHs are already heading there), but I doubt that will happen. Are some on the list those that were involved in the 2 Blue Line collisions?

Well if you thought 2600s were gone for good from the Red line you thought wrong. I just saw 2891-2892 leading a southbound train at Jackson 5 minutes ago. Really threw me off guard when I heard DC cars pulling in...I haven't seen them on Red in weeks.

Ah! This is good news to hear.

I have been trying to catch a string of #2600 red line cars for WEEKS, as I realize the chances are becoming slimmer everyday. I spoke with a Red Line station worker two weeks ago, who told me his friend at Howard reported no more #2600s in the yard...

I guess I'll have to continue to keep my eye out...

More cars are moving around on the Orange line.

#2705-06, #2785-86 and #2879-80 are back on the orange line, but they lost 12 cars to LTH status. #2727-28, #2737-38, #2825-26, #2829-30, #2991-92 and #3049-50. This drops the orange line total down 6 cars to 186 cars. Blue also went down 4 cars. I wonder where is the breaking point, when they have to put #5000's on the orange? My guess would be soon. If they put out 9 orange lines and 7-9 brownages for service, that would put us in the neighborhood of 164 cars. Figure spares and the total might be close to where it currently sits at 186, but it might be more in the 170's.

Unless one can demonstrate that the number of trains going out of Midway Yard (Orange or Brownage) has increased in the last couple of years, 160 should be enough. Maybe a few more hanging around to cover for 3200s in rehab (got to get them off those intoxicants).

Basically the problem with your rapid transit and bus estimates is that they are based on the current bloated rosters, compared to what's needed to cover the runs, but Howard Yard is bloated, too. But for transfers to be justified, they have to get the DC fleet at Midway under 160 (and I would argue considerably below that).

I don't know if i would say the orange line is bloated. They had increased the brownage runs in recent picks where it used to be 5-6 runs now it's 7-8. 9 trains on the orange is an approximate figure as I've counted them. Most of the extras were in the morning, but now they do afternoon brownages, but the yard still has a few trains in it. So I would guess there's not as many afternoon brownages as morning ones. Red might be bloated, but maybe not that much. 384 are needed for service and they have 420 something cars, so that's just 40 spare cars. The bloatedness was mostly from #2600's at 98th. Now they are gone that fleet is more balanced. The green line would be my prime suspect in the bloated cars category. 130 cars with approximately 30-40 spares. It's obvious to me here they are doing this to keep the lines consolidated but they will have to do something with the orange line because it will be an anomaly starting in 2016.

I just saw a 4-car train of higher 5500s going south from Adams/Wabash, Not In Service. Run number 501. If it's 501 it's probably Purple Line training but I'm going to go to Midway as soon as I have time to see if I can spot anything and also to see how many cars are there.

500 runs are Purple Line. You might have to save a trip to Midway. Now if it was in the 700s, then you would've got out there in a hurry! xD

Ah, so the training run numbers actually match the line they're training for? I wasn't sure if they just plugged in whatever number was convenient for training sessions :P
