Furthermore I would gave NP operate some artics on the 49. Add 63rd to that because even today there was a 15 minute gap between buses and there was already a full bus by the time it reached me at cottage grove. That was utterly ridiculous and hell even some of 74th's operators told me that they didn't know whether or not the 15 or less rule was still in effect which had me baffled knowing that the control center sends out reminders every 30 minutes to an hour via the clever cab about it.If I were the top brass I'd exchange the 8,43,51,and 52A for the 9,49,and 63. The only issue with Ashland is the designated relief point because I doubt any operator would want it at 79th and Ashland as unsafe as it is over there. I do like the idea of sharing the routes though even if they couldn't make a trade for them.

First it gets hit at ashland, then the red line plus the ridership is good on the side streets like a #77. The #9 would be good with artics. They have the ridership for it easily plus it's a nice wide street. I know 79th/ashland is dicey so why not have direct pullouts. 77th isnt that far away what 12 blocks. Plus ashland is a good 2 and a half hour route so it should work. You could even combine it with something else.

What's even worse about 63rd is the designated relief point is at Ashland so lets say its at anytime of the AM/PM rush and there's no relief made, you're going to have a 15 minute headway turn into 30 minutes or more considering the fact that you have a full load waiting there along with more passengers waiting to go EB/WB. Going back to your other point, I wouldn't mind having direct pullouts because currently when operators from other garages come pick up buses to return back to there home garage some have runs for the pm rush and i've seen numerous runs for Ashland come out of 77th.If anything doing trippers would really help out whether it is local or express. 77th has the least amount of routes that have high ridership other than the obvious ones, sharing routes that need assistance would really help out the part timers in the times were in because getting less than 30 hours right now along with not getting overtime isn't going to cut it. We can only do VTA's for so long before there's some push back.

It would be really hard to run artics on the 9 no matter what, that right hand turn off Ashland on to Irving park on the NB 9 is a difficult turn for just a 40 foot bus. Sometimes its next to impossible for drivers to clear that turn.

If Clark wasn't so close, I would consider extending the 9 to Clark and Arthur. But I know that turnaround is full with the 36, 59, and 151. Do you wait and our yiyr passengers in the next bus? If so, do you pull in? Do you inform CTA control? Do they provide instructions like wait or continue the run? I doubt this is a rule, but I've experienced a driver leaving the bus at the end of his shift. Fortunately his relief showed, but that was 15 minutes after the first driver left. By this time, the follower was right behind us. It's probably too expensive, but if possible, it would be nice if each CTA garage had its own radio frequency in addition to the current channels. That way, a garage could communicate to its driver if a relief is running late or a no show.

Well from my experience, it wouldnt be too hard of a turn because your coming from a wide street just keep away from the curb cut it as wide as you can get and if you get close to the left turn cars they will move for you. They dont want to get hit either. Theres one turn I make which is hair raising one lane side street to one lane side street and to top it off theres a crosswalk crossing sign so you cant cheat. I find myself angling about 65 to 70 degrees and just going into the other lane until I can clear the obstructions of the turn. Theres a telephone pole on the Rt side too. I was told on here once that instructors claim the artics are easier to turn because your turning 2 30 foot sections but like for me it's definitely not good making that turn as a complete rookie to artics. Experience is your teacher. When I first started I told all my instructors how they just whip around the corners. I find myself doing that now but of course thats at a wide turn. andrethebusman
I will confirm artics easier to turn. 60 footer turns like 35 footer as trailer follows where middle axle goes. Middle clears, so will tail.
BusHunter
They once had a hard turn when they were doing construction on Addison. It was a few years ago, well maybe 5 plus. It was an Addison Eb to Oak Park Sb. They were running the artics then. Addison is wide, not the widest, but Oak Park you have that one lane issue again cause it's very narrow. Turned out the artics made that turn. It was a 40 foot bus that rubbed the light pole on the right side. There are a few tricky turns around. Was riding a #54A once, when the sb bus crossing the Metra tracks north of Montrose rubbed his lower molding right off the Nova bus he was driving. So i watched other drivers what they do. They take both lanes into the turn. This guy who rubbed off his molding right behind the back door turned his bus keeping it in the far right lane. You know when I take my bus through there I use both lanes myself. If I have to block traffic or wait it out, it's worth not having an accident. It seemed like it used to be standard practice for CTA buses to use both lanes when going under any RR viaduct. It amazes me that semis don't do the same. Any large vehicle going through that particular viaduct on Cicero near Montrose should use both lanes.

Well the procedure is 5-10 minutes waiting for your relief, if they're not there within the scheduled grace period then you pretty much call control and they either will inform you to pull in the bus after giving your followers bus your passengers, continue in service to the end of the route then pull in or stand by for further instruction via supervision. We're suppose to wait for our relief to take control of our bus but some operators leave there bus and sometimes the relief may or may not show up after 5-10 minutes. Sometimes if control and the garage are in communication with eachother via telephone or radio they'll relay a message to the operator to inform them that they do not have a relief and usually were instructed to pull in from the terminal or go a certain distance before pulling in. Sometimes you'll see certain runs on 79th street heading eastbound from Ford City/Western with only the Wentworth destination sign displaying. I remember having to display the N87 destination after being notified that I wouldn't have a relief.

But when they have the no parking signs by the curb you would be surprised how much easier it makes the turn. I've seen tons of buses either get into an accident or get stuck at the neva turn on west addison. They used to not have the no parking signs at the curb there. Whoa that made that turn something. Even now you might have an illegal parker there. Some times you have to draw the line and say I can't make that turn. Its when you force it you get in trouble. Seek the alternative. Mr.cta85
Lol the truth is it’s actually pretty easy to make that right turn on Irving Park and Ashland and it’s easy in both 40 and 60fter with me having done both before. When I was at 103rd a about 6yrs ago they used us a shuttle/gap buses from Madison to Irving park to help the regular operators cause it was like a big concert there by lake and Ashland. So I did a route from basically 95th all the way up north and when I got the Irving park it’s the same way you would turn a 40fter just make sure you angle out enough to make the turn and you’re good. YoungBusLover
Welp I just saw the aftermath of what #4090 got on Michigan and Jackson during my run tonight. The damage isn't to severe but it is noticeable on the drivers side. The windshield is almost shattered and the panels on the side of bent inwards. #210 has been pretty busy these last couple of weeks. #1783 is also in the boneyard and it appears that #6692 and #6699 are LTH for some reason. #1245 still hasn't moved so I'm assuming it's also LTH as well as it still has its farebox and ventra reader for now.
