5000-series - Updates

Has anybody seen a car dated in 2015 yet? I thought by 605-606 they'd be dated 2015 from January but 606's plaque says 2014.

No probably not until 30-40 cars in. I thought one time I saw one in April for the new year. But that's one way of confirming how many ahead they are at the factory.

As of 2/1 5000's as follows:

5001-5050 Pink

5051-5182 Green

5183-5400 Red

5401-5428, 5447-5460, 5463-5478, 5491-5492, 5495-5496 Purple

5429-5446, 5461-5462, 5479-5490, 5493-5494, 5497-5516 Red

5517-5522 Yellow

5523-5612 Red

Moves January - 5047-5050 Green to Pink

5167-5182 Red to Green

2789-2790, 2825-2826, 2913-2914, 2983-2984 Red to Orange

Prediction: 5401-5516 eventually to Purple, 5523-5714 to Red. I know it sounds like a lot, but figure currently Purple has 100, this makes it 116, Red has 390, this makes it 410.

I did the math for the 5000's on your list for the Red Line, and it counts to it having 362 of them. That, with its 36 2600's still on its roster, adds to 398 cars total.

From what you said that the Red Line currently has 390 cars and the Purple Line has 100, what 8 2600's were taken off the Red and 2 taken off the Purple? Where did those 10 cars go?

No #5000's for the orange line? But how? They do look like maybe they are trying to do that. No way do they have the storage on the Red line for all these 100 cars extra, so what they do is send extras to the Pink and Green. But that's nutty again. These 100 cars will basically be in storage/extra service. (new cars) Are they really that obsessed with having one fleet type per yard?

It almost seems like they are trying to set up for 5000s to be on the Orange Line, but instead of giving them the newest of the cars, the Orange Line will receive the upper 5100s and lower 5200s. By doing that, it would allow for all of the blue interior cars to remain at Howard. By slowly moving cars to the Green and Pink lines for now, it would allow the extra cars to be used as older cars make it through this winter season- which is why I think they have not really started the 2600-series retirement. Either that, or they will just move a group of 5000s to the Orange Line and move those remaining 2600s back to the Red, Blue and Purple Lines and retire random 2600-series cars as the remaining 5000s arrive.

Now that's how the CTA thinks!! They have been buying time with this #5000's transfer as they don't have to retire the #2600's (yet) as they are purging #5000's. If they keep it up with the #5000 transferring it might be like my theory. Garmon had a picture on Facebook of the #2400's still at Midway yard. Well if they haven't retired those yet, then the #2600's aren't going anywhere yet. Also i haven't heard of any scrap contract yet for the #2600's. I wonder could they possibly have the space to not retire the #2600's at all?

There was one for 2400s and 2600s.

Other than that, it appears that the "almost seems" is again only speculation which CTA is more than willing to disprove.

Nope. I saw them myself at Fullerton around 11:15 PM and the last two cars were in the 5300s.

Oh, that's even later than I saw them. There must have been more. The first one I saw was shortly before 10pm and the second one was at 10:15 or 10:30...I wonder if they're just moving some from the 95th yard up north for some reason.

So with the uptick of 5000's on the Green line (132), will there be more frequent service on that line or 8 car service during rush hours?

8 car service only if the platforms can accommodate that (maybe the Ashland-63 part can). Maybe more service between Harlem and Roosevelt.

Considering the fact that the Red Line used the South Side Green Line during the Dan Ryan project, those platforms on the entire Green Line can accommodate 8-car trains, right?

That's why I excluded 63-Cottage Grove branch, as the Red Line only used the 63-Ashland branch, and it appears that the Cottage Grove station can't accommodate them (nor that that branch has the passenger demand).

But for the reason you state, I should delete the word "maybe" (subsequently struck through).

I think it can, as I've seen 8 car marker signs at Laramie, and Ridgeland seems to have long enough platforms for 8 car trains.

They were able to run 8 car trains there when it was the Lake-Dan Ryan. I don't think they shortened any platforms, certainly not on the embankment portion, where the complaint was that CTA did nothing at all, including about making them accessible.

All Green line have eight car berths except Cottage Grove. Although Cottage STILL has an eight berth on the NB platform, left over from when the line ran from University. Space for the end of the track, trip trips, red signal uses the space.
