Aside from the implication that that would result in the buses being underpowered, (Press release referring to smaller engine for lighter bus), and all of fhe 1000s being rehabbed randomly at about the same time (topic), bus powertrains are made to slide out. At least in Pace specs, the requirement was to provide another rebuilt engine and keep the old engine for whatever Cummins or other service center wanted. That can be bad as 4300-4399 aren't enough artics to maintain all artic routes in the CTA, I would surmise. Will this mean an order for more artics will be forthcoming by 2025 or 2026? In a weird way NP,FG and C may have to start treating those buses like the #6400s and only run them during peak service to cut down on the amount of time they'll be in serivce. 74th should off load those extra #7900s they have to help out if push comes to shove. Erin Mishkin Jr. Posted November 28, 2023 Report Share Posted November 28, 2023 (edited) A lot of buses are being kicked off the street due to rusting issues…but one unit in particular with a good chunk of rust on it and is still operating, two months after first being spotted with the rusting, is still active. This is 1869 out of north park. Pretty surprised they’re keeping this one running for now even with all the rust it’s got. One could probably surmise that after a month still in operation that NP or maybe South Shops maintenance folks have done such such inspections for 1869. CTA already has the feds looking over its shoulder after the recent Yellow Line accident. I'm not saying that to be alarmist. I don't think they'd really risk it by not having proper inspections to put the bus in service for so long after spotting the rust areas along the lower frame. Ever since the big NABI meltdown, they've visibly and historically tended to get that part right as evidenced by the number of NFs pulled off the road and moved down to South Shops boneyard, the increase of 7900s and deliveries of 8350s to K, and the swapping in of displaced, relatively better condition lower option NFs to NP.
