If I'm not mistaken,  the original bid for the 7000s was to be compatible with the 5000s.  However I don't think anyone bid other than possibly Bombardier ( who built the 5000s).  Rather than just award Bombardier the contract,  they opted to remove the compatible requirements

You also have to consider the delays and mechanical problems CTA had with the 5000s.  Also consider the problems NY had with Bombardier.   To make those matters worse,  Mayor Rahm Emmanuel got caught trying to strike a sweetheart deal with Bombardier to get the 7000s contract and Bombardier would build the cars in Chicago at the Lower 63rd Yard site..  Part of the reason for the modified bid was to not appear to be favoring Bombardier.

I was about to say mid-life rehabs on the 5000s but yeah, can’t couple 5s and 7s due to two different technologies and systems. It wouldn’t be a good idea in this era at all.

Maybe the mid life rehabs will negate the red line high miles problems, but still you have cars with barely any miles like the #5400's and some with the motherload #5200's and #53's. Even rehabs don't erase high miles. It would be cool to see the blue interior #5000's on the blue line someday but it probably won't happen that way, they probably end up with the first 450. I forget where the tan and blue interior change.

5001 to 5268 is tan and 5269 to 5714 are blue.

The 5000s that operate in the Blue Line originate from 54th Yard with Pink Line run numbers    They operate weekdays during rush periods between UIC Halsted and Jefferson Park.

I know. I was trying to tell you that you have these cars listed for the Red Line, instead of Pink Line or Blue Line

I found that because of the pandemic, Blue Line 5000 series cars are not running. They are assigned to 54th Yard, but you have them listed for Red Line...

Seems to be the pattern at most systems now. Orders are do large compatibility with older types does not matter. New York now keeps each type separate, which was not the case from 1948 thru late 80s when most were fully compatible and could and did run in mixed trains.

WMATA was probably one of the last agencies that stressed compatibility between rail cars and even they’ve change their tune now

Yeah I’ve noticed for the CTA 5000s and the WMATA 7000s the amount of cars ordered is so gargantuan that fleet interoperability doesn’t really matter anymore. None of the CTA High Performance Family cars were ever produced in quantities above 300, with the exception of the 2600s, and that’s only because the order was doubled. The 5000s were only supposed to be around 300 cars too, but then the order grew to that colossal 714 car order we know now. It was the same in DC. The most produced series of the legacy fleet was the 1000 Series, and that hit 300 cars, while the new 7000 Series hit 748 cars. What’s interesting is for the 7000 Series in Chicago and the 8000 Series in DC, the total of cars is a range, depending on if options are picked up.

If you can’t make them work together, just replace them all I guess.

You can include the yellow line with #7000's, no way will it run with incompatible cars from Red and Purple. So it sounds like the game plan is to run #5000's on green and Blue and pink. That means the west side will have all the older equipment and the NW side. I'm not surprised the nw side hasn't had new cars in 40 years so why not make it 70 or 80. I still say it was a bad decision to make those cars (#5000 and #7000s)  incompatible with each other. One day something will happen and each series won't be able to sub for the other. Putting red line cars on Blue is bad also high mileage cars to a high mileage line. Probably i'd get Blue the Green and Purple line #5000's. Put the Red #5000s on Pink 100 cars let them rotate and get in good shape and then if they please they could go to the blue. Something needs to offset the red line miles. BTW, orders are going out for the #5000 rehabs, so soon that will start.

The smartest thing for CTA to do with the L car rosters would be to get right on with upgrading the blue line power systems for AC cars ASAP, the blue line needs to get the newest equipment to avoid another 2600 situation. The brown line should the rest of its 3200s to the blue line (with the exception of 3441-3458 because the roof boards can’t fit in the kimball subway and the blue line doesn’t want to mix 3200s and 2600s in the same sets.) and the brown line become all 2600s then when the 7000s get delivered, they need to go to the blue line right away and fully equip the blue line first then the blues 2600s retire and 3200s are sent to brown and orange then the 7000s fully equip brown and orange and retire the 2600s and 3200s then the rest of the 7000s fully equip green and pink lines and send all their 5000s to the red line to even out mileage on the 5000s. The red, purple and yellow lines have all the 5000s and the 5000s with the most mileage get a break.

The O Hare branch of the Blue Line us getting the power upgrades now.   The primary problem is when CTA can get to upgrade the Forest Park branch     This is complicated by IDOT'S plans to reconstruct the Ike   it wouldn't make sense for CTA Zto do do power upgrades and reconstruction of that branch until they can coordinate their project with IDOT.

IDOT is dragging the Ike rebuild study along. Politically, the $8 billion cost is not palatable and IDOT is revising the study to reduce the costs.

I forgot about CTA trying to coordinate forest park with IDOT, hopefully it can be done by the time of the 7000s delivery. It wouldn’t be good for the blue line to get the red lines 5000s because the blue line is another heavy line like the red line and it’s bad to put cars that already have the wear and tear and mileage on the blue line.

I don’t see why the Brown Line has to keep its 3200s. Other than the platform ones, the rest could be sent to the Blue Line in exchange for 2600s and the Borwn and Orange Lines would also have a homogenous stock. It can’t be power issues preventing this, as there are 3200s right now.

Also, how come the Blue Line doesn’t intermingle rail cars. I’d noticed this before but keep forgetting to ask. I know the Brown Line mixes their 3200s and 2600s (either 6:2 or 4:4 from what I’ve seen)

There gonna to have a big issue with the Forest Pk branch if indeed the rail conditions are screwing up the automated leveling of the 5000s. It sure seems funny we still have not seen 5000s on the forest pk line.

I believe the Ike project was not supposed to start until the Jane Byrne interchange was completed. It's running way late supposed to be done by 2023, so they have their hands full. Forest pk will need a complete rebuild down to the ballast, so theres nothing they can do but run #3200s on it as long as they can. If they cant finish in time to receive #5000s CTA may have to get creative. Maybe either make Racine a temp 4 track transfer point or consider running blues to 54th/cermak. They actually have the real estate to do that at Racine. I wonder what the 7000 issues would be on the forest pk branch. They may end up there anyway if they are compatible with the forest pk issues. But blue will always be apart from the rest of the system so it will live up to its name the blue line. They need to play some muddy waters on the PA.

I dont really understand putting 7000s on the red to start. That's got to be wrong. It's too demanding for an unproven new train. They should at least start them on the purple or yellow. They'll know alot more once the prototypes take trips along the main lines.

Correct information is Yellow Line has 5517-5526. You listed 5523-5526 on Red. Red Line has 384 cars because 5523-5526 belong to Yellow.

I agree the Red Line is too heavy of a line to test the 7000s. But I don't think the Purple or Yellow Lines would be a good idea either, since it seems like CTA wants the Red, Purple, and Yellow lines to operate with the same type to make operations at Howard Yard easier. Maybe the Orange Line would be a good place to start; it's not a particularly heavy line, and if I remember correctly, it has the oldest 2600s. If not, the Green and Pink lines are another option, and I believe those were the first lines to run completely with 5000s.

Your idea about the 4 track transfer point at Racine is interesting. Were you thinking of short-turning trains at Racine similar to how trains are currently short-turned at UIC? Or were you thinking of breaking the Blue LIne into two parts there?

Also, is it feasible to shutdown and renovate the Forest Park branch the way the Dan Ryan was renovated in 2013? It might even be easier since there is more alternative service for the Forest Park branch. If such a thing happens, it definitely makes sense to run Blue Line trains to 54th/Cermak, and probably reduce frequency on the Pink Line while increasing frequency on the Lake Street branch of the Green Line.
